Concerns have been raised over the years in regards to the issue of human trafficking. Countless international groups such as charities have tried to increase public awareness around the issue of trafficking of human beings and at the same time have encouraged governmental bodies to acknowledge this problem that its affecting people around the world and which has increased dramatically over the past years (Newburn, 2013,pp.430-431). The trafficking of human beings has reached a global level, with thousands of men, women and children been abducted with the promise of a better quality of life. The trafficking of human beings has been around for centuries. Historically, slavery was regarded as a form of human progress, a transaction with the sole purpose of the expansion of the Western world and which was considered necessary in order to carry out the labor activities However, in reality, slavery was a continuing form of exploitation for economic purposes within which slaves were subjected to the owner s desires by being sold, hold captive, punished or kill (Morgan, 2007, pp.11-16)[38]. According to Honorà © (2013, p.4)[14], â€Å"Slaves did not control their own way of life. They were items of property, they had no rights enforceable by law†. Enduring Issues - 797 Words

Charmaine Williams Professor Gordon Sociology January 21, 2015 The five enduring issues that draw Psychologists together are person versus situation, heredity versus environment, or nature versus nurture, stability versus change, diversity versus universality, and mind versus body. Competitive Strategy of an Organization Free-Samples for Students

Questions: 1.What is Strategy?2.Whyis Business Model Innovation is Importanat for an Organization?3.Discuss about the Pankaj Ghemawat CAGE Framework. Answers: 1.Strategy is considered as the creation of a position that is unique and valuable and involves a specific set of activities. It requires organizations or individuals to make trade-offs while competing for choosing what is not required to be done. It also involves the creation of fitness among company activities (Grant 2016). Strategy is all about being different and deliberately choosing a diverse of activities for delivering an exclusive mix of value. Organizations use strategy to execute activities in a different way than their competitors. Strategy is the building of an exclusive and valuable position that involves a different range of activities. Strategic position of any organization is neither mutually exclusive nor do they overlap. For an organization to achieve sustainable competitive advantage they need to do more than just choose a unique position for themselves. For sustainable competitive advantage a business must carry out tradeoffs with other strategic positions (Freed man 2015). A business that is in dire need of a good strategy is Compaq. Once the worlds largest supplier of PCs in the 1990s, the company experienced a downfall in 2002 with short term debts and stock trading. The company got acquired by Hewlett Packard and was later discontinued as a brand name. The company acquired success in a very short time due to its differentiating strategy and competitive pricing. They happened to provide huge credibility and unmatched technological advancement. The company faced its downfall by the correlation between accelerated growth and shorter life spans, as companies having a moderate growth rate face the lowest amount of risk. The industry desired for improved technology. As traditional business hardware was becoming an obsolete segment, Compaq attempted differentiating by moving into software and other services. By attempting to dominate every segment of the computer industry Compaq distracted its executives from their main business of selling PCs. What Compaq should have done is to provide the responsibility to its leaders of aligning their strategies with the changing business environment. It executives should have tried to maintain a balance between maintenance of the existing business and the retuning of the same (ZDNet Editors 2017). 2.Business Model Innovation For every company in every industry, innovation is an extremely important process. In most of the cases, innovation only gets associated with new innovative products or technical advancements. However, innovations of business models are considerably more profitable. Business model innovations have been keystones in reshaping industries and redistribution of billion dollars of value (Massa and Tucci 2013). Analysis of some major innovations shows that very few of them are business-model related. Business model innovations are about primarily rethinking the business around a specific customer need and then realigning the processes, resources and profit formula with the help of the new value proposition. It is a difficult procedure for the decision makers, who have to leave their comfort zones. However, the outcomes come as a dramatic. Modifications in globalization, customer preferences and technological innovations are building windows of opportunities for the fresh business models. F or implementation of an innovative business model a description and discussion facilitating concept is necessary. It is provided with the responsibility of grasping and mediating the primary standard of a companys value creation (Amit and Zott 2012). A company that needs a business model innovation is Volkswagen, the second biggest carmaker in the world. They themselves admitted that they have been dishonest with their regulators and customers. They had software installed in their cars that provides false emission data of their diesel cars. Therefore, it is a perfect example of a situation where the values promised to the customers and the actual behaviour and conduct outright contradicts. Due to this Volkswagen had to face a perfect storm. They faced fines, criminal charges and legal actions from their customers. A third of the companys market share got wiped out. The worst thing that happened is that the deed carried out by Volkswagen totally contradicts their promise in their value proposition. Volkswagen should have carried out their promise of high moral conduct and responsibility towards its customers. Being a well established organization they should have been able to differentiate between right and wrong. The overall auto mobile industry has a bad track record of executing their promises in terms of emission and fuel consumption (Dans 2015). 3.Pankaj Ghemawat CAGE Framework Pankaj Ghemawats CAGE analysis can act as an excellent tool for companies and businesses equally who are looking for developing international expansion strategies. The CAGE framework recognizes the middle ground amongst two extremes of mass customization and one size fits all, which typifies majority of the product development efforts and global market strategies. The framework is extremely useful in easily assessing the potential risks, barriers and size in different international markets. It also assists in eliminating the guesswork involved in choosing the countries to penetrate and in which order it must be done. The CAGE framework helps identify the current products that are very easily transportable at the lowest possible cost and also helps develop new products which are exclusive to global ventures. The framework has four dimensions: Cultural, Administrative, Geographic and Economic. This framework can be utilized to compare the changes of succeeding in different countries in any given market. Organizations can make use of CAGE framework for choosing where to invest (Ghemawat 2013). An organization that required massive help in understanding the Cultural, Administrative, Geographic and Economic differences or distances while designing international strategies is Starbucks. Starbucks Israel failed dismally after two years of its establishment. The taste of Starbucks coffee did not go down well with the Israel customers, who preferred stronger coffees in tiny cups. Even after the management was informed they shrugged it off and did not attempt to localize the flavor. They also spread over five different locations with branches instead of setting up several branches in one location. As the caf opened and the actual sales turned out to be less than projected, the employees panicked and several were fired, which also affected motivation. Starbucks should have conducted a proper market research and modified their products according to the local preferences. Understanding of Israels culture, administration, geography and economy would have helped them create a business model that could have stopped their failure (Steinberg 2014). Socrates was a man of the Periclean age, which witnessed one of the periodic bankruptcies of science. Cosmological speculation, which had been boldly pursued from the beginning of the 6th century, seemed to have led to a chaos of conflicting systems of thought. People had turned away from pursue of science and concentrated themselves not with truth but with making a successful human life. In this time of chaos and individualism, Socrates was the most realistic person in sight. He was always searching for more than the meanings of things already had. He wanted proof of what was defined, proof which would give logical reasons for it self. He was an inquirer, unsatisfied and still looking for truth. Unlike others he was not self-centered, always ready to be corrected. His nature of being broad minded reflected his way of teaching people, which actually seems to be learning by them. This is the beauty of his method, called as The Socratic Dialectical Method. Procedure Socrates did not call people towards him self, he went out towards them and asked them their views instead of lecturing and forcing his thoughts on them. It was a dialogue form discussion, where individuals brought up their view points on a particular subject set by Socrates. On one side there was Socrates playing the role of the enquirer, asking the questions and on the other side the conversant with whom the conversation was being held, would submit to answer Socrates questions. It was actually a test of the beliefs one had by questioning them about it. Socrates let the other speak first and as he spoke Socrates brought up questions for him out of his arguments, picking up threads out of what he spoke. The primary question is not always the first question which is  raised more for dramatic purposes. Socrates persuades his conversant into teaching him the meaning of a virtue by the use of Socratic irony: that he does not know the truth but his friend must be wise and clever so that he can teach Socrates the meaning of virtue. The conversant answers Socrates primary questions by stating a definition that is to be examined by a number of secondary questions. The secondary questions often are intended to find internal inconsistencies in the definition or conclusions that are inconsistent with other views held by the conversant or by the majority of mankind. When Socrates explains these inconsistencies he formulates a refutation Greek: elenchos of the definition after several further attempts to define the subject, Socrates conversant admits that he does not know or that he now knows that he does not know. One by one all the participants of the discussion are questioned of their beliefs. Finally comes up Socrates himself, though to a higher extent he may be already knew the real truth about what the discussion was but now he knows also what others think. Here comes the ability to deduce out of all these the real and actual on which all will have to agree, unarguable and non-disagreeable because what it will b e, will be all and all out of what the people have spoken themselves. Now, Socrates end up the discussion with a new definition of the topic, a definition deduced by all of the peoples knowledge and his ability to scrutinize and extract the real these views contained. .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b , .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .postImageUrl , .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b , .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:hover , .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:visited , .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:active { border:0!important; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:active , .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud37e4e4a519c98c86244b46f2a112e0b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Metropolitan Museum of Art EssayAll the way through this conversation some steps took places, which are listed below: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Conversation à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Concepts à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Methodological Doubt à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Induction à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Deduction Out of these the two major approaches that help the decision are; Methodic doubt no one is right and Deduction à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" everyones right side contributes to the final right. Briefly defining notes on both follow. Methodic Doubt A way of searching for certainty, systematically, though tentatively, doubting everything. First, all statements are classified according to type and source of knowledgeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ e.g., knowledge from tradition, empirical knowledge, and mathematical knowledge. Then, examples from each class are examined. If a way can be found to doubt the truth of any statement, then all other statements of that type are also set aside as dubitable. The doubt is methodic because it assures systematic completeness, but also because no claim is made that allà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ or even that anyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ statements in a dubitable class are really false or that one must or can distrust them in an ordinary sense. The method is to set aside as conceivably false all statements and types of knowledge that are not indubitably true. The hope is that, by eliminating all statements and types of knowledge the truth of which can be doubted in any way, one will find some indubitable certainties. Deductive Approach In logic, a rigorous proof, or derivation, of one statement the conclusion from one or more statements the premisesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ i.e., a chain  of statements, each of which is either a premise or a consequence of a statement occurring earlier in the proof. This usage is a generalization of what the Greek philosopher Aristotle called the syllogism, but a syllogism is now recognized as merely a special case of a deduction. Also, the traditional view that deduction proceeds from the general to the specific or from the universal to the particular has been abandoned as incorrect by most logicians. Some experts regard all valid inference as deductive in form and, for this and other reasons reject the supposed contrast between deduction and induction. See also axiomatic method; formal system; inference. Negative Positive Socrates procedure is a negative kind of thing-it aims to find what is wrong with a belief. If a belief fails, it obviously should be rejected-either completely, or reformulated in light of their failures. However, if a belief survives questioning, we should accept it provisionally: we dont know that it is wrong, but we also dont know that it is right. A future round of questions may be its undoing. Yet it seems to be an inductive quality and has made the Socratic Method the basic of all scientific methods today. Note: Methodic Doubt, Deductive Approach and Negative Positive, all are extracts from various sources with slight changes.

Definition of the Elsewhere Principle in Linguistics

Definition of the Elsewhere Principle in Linguistics In linguistics, the Elsewhere Principle is the proposition that the application of a specific rule or operation overrides the application of a more general rule. Also known as the Subset Principle, the Elsewhere Condition, and the Paninian Principle. American linguist Stephen R. Anderson points out that the Elsewhere Principle is invoked by [Stephen R.] Anderson (1969), [Paul] Kiparsky (1973), [Mark] Aronoff (1976), Anderson (1986), [Arnold M.] Zwicky (1986), etc., with antecedents going back to [the fourth century BC Sanskrit grammarian] PÄ Ã¡ ¹â€¡ini, [19th-century German linguist] Hermann Paul, and probably others (A-Morphous Morphology, 1992). Examples and Observations [T]he basic case of competition in morphology can be characterized by the Elsewhere Principle: a more specific form is preferred over a more general one where both are in principle grammatical. By definition, competitors are those forms that can be used to express the same concepts. It is possible, therefore, that competing structures are generated in different components, in particular, morphology and syntax. A well-known example involves the English comparative affix -er, which must attach to short (maximally bisyllabic) adjectives . . .. This morpheme is in competition with the syntactic modifier more, which can in principle attach to both short and long adjectives, and is therefore the more general form. In the context of short adjectives, the Elsewhere Principle dictates that -er blocks more . . .. (We add (19e) to show that in circumstances where the Elsewhere Principle does not apply more can indeed modify short adjectives.) (19a) Bigger(19b) *Intelligenter(19c) *More big(19d) More intelligent(19e) Bigger means more big This classical application of the Elsewhere Principle demonstrates that a morphological complex can be in competition with a syntactic phrase. . . .It does not seem too much to say that one of the core phenomena of morphology, and perhaps of grammar in general, is that one form can compete with, and hence block, others. The classical cases of such competition involve inflectional morphology as regulated by the Elsewhere Principle. . . . [W]e have argued that there are many more examples of competition, which differ from the classical case in terms of the nature of the candidates and the selecting restraints. (Peter Ackema and Ad Neeleman, Word-Formation in Optimality Theory. Handbook of Word-Formation, ed. by Pavol Ã…  tekauer and Rochelle Lieber. Springer, 2005 Mapping Rules An idiosyncratic mapping rule need not mention a single morpho-syntactic terminal; it can also apply to combinations of (morpho-)syntactic material. For example, next to the mapping rules that associate TOOTH with /tooth/ and PLURAL with /z/, there is a mapping rule which relates [TOOTH PLURAL] to [/teeth/]. This rule can be formulated as follows, where P(X) stands for the phonological realization of a syntactic entity X: If PLURAL selects (a category headed by) TOOTH,then P(TOOTH, PLURAL) /teeth/ Since this mapping rule is more specific than the one that only mentions PLURAL, the elsewhere principle states that the latter is blocked where the former can apply, ruling out *[/tooth/ /z/]. Note that this does not mean that the lexicon contains multiple morpho-syntactic morphemes that represent plurality (there is only one plural affix). (Peter Ackema and Ad Neeleman, Morphological Selection and Representational Modularity. Yearbook of Morphology 2001, ed. by Geert Booij and Jaap van Marle. Kluwer, 2002) Illustration and Qualification Two elements are important in the Elsewhere Principle. First, it inactivates rules in particular cases as a property of the rule system as a whole. Second, it does so in virtue of a logical relationship between rules: entailment between application conditions. The rule that is inactivated by a second rule applying to the same case applies to all cases to which the second rule applies. The English plural is formed by adding a morpheme -s to the end of a stem. A number of words have special plurals, such as goose, which has the plural geese. The existence of the nonregular plural (a remainder of an older plural; formation by means of vowel shift) rules out the regular form *gooses. The rule that assigns geese has the application condition stem goose, which is more specific than the application condition stem X4 for the regular plural formation. It follows by the Elsewhere Principle that the regular rule for plural formation does not apply to goose. There is an important caveat with the Elsewhere Principle: It does not always lead to the right conclusion. It is sometimes possible for the irregular form to coexist with the regular form, and sometimes there is neither an irregular nor a regular form. In these cases, the Elsewhere Principle would predict the absence of a regular form or the presence of a regular form, respectively, predictions that are not borne out by the facts. It follows that in these cases another explanation needs to be sought. (Henk Zeevat, Idiomatic Blocking and the Elsewhere Principle. Idioms: Structural and Psychological Perspectives, ed. by Martin Everaert et al. Lawrence Erlbaum, 1995) Further Reading GrammarMorphologyPhonologyRules of EnglishSyntax
